Swap Screen Time for Sunshine: A Parent's Guide to an Active Summer

by Jonathan Orchison 15 Jul 2025

We understand how hard it can be getting the little ones away from their devices.

In the age of on-demand streaming and immersive online games, encouraging children to be active and healthy during the school summer holidays can feel like an uphill battle. While technology can be a valuable tool for education and development, excessive screen time can negatively impact the mental health and well-being of young people.

The Unseen Impact of Screens

Recent statistics paint a concerning picture. Data from NHS Digital reveals that in 2022, 18% of children and young people aged 7 to 16 had a probable mental health disorder, a stark increase from 12.1% in 2017. Although a direct causal link hasn't been proven, a clear association between increased screen time and poorer mental
health has been identified. This trend is further highlighted by a 52% surge in children's screen time between 2020 and 2022. A 2019 study from King’s College London also found that nearly a quarter of children and young adults exhibit patterns of
device use consistent with a behavioural addiction.

These figures underscore the importance of encouraging less time on digital devices and more time embracing the benefits of fresh air and physical activity. But how can parents entice their children away from the online world? Here are some practical and often free ways to get your kids off their phones and enjoying the great outdoors this summer.

1.Discover a World of Community Activities

Across the UK, numerous communities organise a wide array of activities for children throughout the summer holidays. Many of these are free, providing a welcome relief for families on a budget. Keep an eye on your local council's website, community social media groups, and school newsletters for announcements about upcoming events. Places for these activities can be limited, so it's best to book in advance to secure a spot for your child.

2. Explore Your Local Green Spaces

You're likely just a short distance from a variety of parks, walking trails, and nature reserves. These locations are perfect for a relaxing family walk, a fun-filled picnic, or energetic activities like ball games and cycling. Many parks also host special events during the summer, such as family fun days. Your local council's website is
an excellent resource for finding a comprehensive list of nearby parks and trails.

3. Uncover a Treasure Trove of Knowledge at Museums and Galleries

Many museums and galleries offer free admission, providing a fantastic opportunity for children to continue their learning journey away from screens. These institutions allow for first-hand engagement with a wide range of subjects. The "Which Museum" website offers a curated list of free museums and galleries across the UK, making it easy to find a location near you.

4. Get Active with Local Sports Clubs

Social media platforms can be a great way to discover local sports clubs that are perfect for active children. Many clubs and teams run summer camps, offering a fantastic way for your child to stay active and socialise. Enrolling your child in a local sports club can also create a long-term passion for a particular sport, extending the benefits well beyond the summer months.

Now that you have the knowledge and ways to get the little ones away from their devices and outside instead, we hope you have an action-packed summer full of fun family days out and fresh air!
